Ublox now offers a free online and offline ephemeris stream for A-GPS. The offline client-centric version stores a small-footprint local device database to speed up first-time-to-fix, and the online version transparently updates aiding data with every device boot. The offering proves when more logic moves to the network edge and powerful handsets, other once-valuable server capabilities evolve towards insignificance. That’s not to say server software isn’t needed, but rather more smarts can be offloaded to devices introducing alternative cost structures.
