Good news. Apple lifted prohibition on turn-by-turn navigation for iPhone deciding to pass on it themselves, now allowing any 4th party developer (I say 4th party because Apple themselves are the 3rd party) to bring Nav apps to the iTunes App Store. To deploy, nav app sellers are prohibited from using Apple's native mapping capabilities and must license navigable street map data directly from the obvious sources. There are bunch of nav app providers out there doing that today, and without distribution and billing challenges remaining via the iTunes App Store, I suspect we'll soon see pricing wars and commoditization madness. And beyond that, this is also a chasm-crossing event for the street-map commodity game to enter its next wastewater phase. Cloudmade..., you gonna join the party and really shake this up?
